I read that book about six months ago and did not enjoy it very much. Although the concept was interesting and certain passages very well written, especially those having a basis in eastern philosophy I found it overly verbose, lumbering, and felt like I was really wading through some portions. I agree with your point about perhaps getting more out of it if I was more familiar with Hindu, what with all that exposition on aspects and such.

Much of the book was written as if relating a legend, rather than telling a story - if you understand my meaning. Lord of Light seemed like a religious text in some places and Tolkein-esque in others. I thought that the style worked, but its easy to see how someone wouldn't like it.
